Singaporean actor-host Suhaimi Yusof has apologised for acting disrespectfully towards the staff at a Ramadan bazaar stall.
The 54-year-old entertainer posted a five-and-a-half minute video on Friday (Mar 22) on his Instagram and Facebook, where he shared his version of the incident that happened at a drinks stall at Bazar Raya Utara at Admiralty.
This was in response to the four-and-a-half minute TikTok posted by Sheik Mohammad, owner of the drinks stall Sizzlers by Bismi Biryani.
In a video posted on Mar 20, Sheik said in Malay that Suhaimi was “making a scene” at his stall.
While he did not share when the incident took place, he said that Suhaimi had gone to the front of his stall’s long queue, and told Sheik’s mother, who was helping at the stall, that he wanted to buy S$50 worth of drinks to give the other customers as an act of charity.
However, when Sheik proceeded to give away random drinks to the people in the queue, Suhaimi stopped him and said the customers should be able to choose the beverages they wanted, which Sheik said was unreasonable given it was a busy time.
Sheik also alleged in the video that Suhami called his mother "blur" and a worker at the stall “stupid”.
He then questioned Suhaimi’s charitable intention as the entertainer was accompanied by a crew of cameramen.
“That’s not giving charity. Giving charity should be done quietly,” he said.
Two days later, Suhaimi responded with an apology video, captioned: “I, Suhaimi Yusof, humbly wish to apologise to the stall owners, families, staff and visitors involved in the incident resulting from my mistake in communication.
“I really hope my apology can be accepted because I am someone who doesn’t run away from mistakes.”
Speaking in Malay, Suhaimi explained that the incident was a result of miscommunication.
He shared that he had gone to the bazaar to buy food and snacks after finishing a shoot when he noticed the long queue at Sizzlers.
Because the film crew was already with him, he made the spontaneous decision to shoot a video at the stall. He said he had asked Sheik's mother for permission to shoot and she had agreed. He then decided to buy S$50 worth of drinks to donate to the people in the queue.
However, Suhaimi admitted that he was wrong to approach them while they were swamped with customers, and that he had failed to explain his filming plans to them. He also was unaware of the different prices for the drinks, which made the situation more complicated.
In the video, Suhaimi said that he had never called anyone stupid, or "bodoh", before, but apologised nonetheless if he had unintentionally done so during the commotion.
“I am very sorry to makcik (Sheik’s mother) for hurting your feelings. I am willing to admit that mistake,” he added, seemingly holding back tears.
This apology seems to have boded well with Sheik as he and Suhaimi later shared a cup of teh tarikwith Member of Parliament representing the Woodlands ward of Sembawang GRC, Amrin Amin.
On Mar 24, Mr Amrin shared a picture of the three of them on Instagram, with the caption: “This is the true spirit of Ramadan: finding the good in others, staying humble, and fostering unity and togetherness.”
He added that Suhaimi and Sheik had put the misunderstanding behind them, and are “moving on as friends”.
“The impulse to cancel is tempting. The harder path is to find the strengths in each other, encourage and support, and be gracious in apologising and accepting the apology. Thank you for showing the way, Sheik and Suhaimi.”
