A 21-year-old undergraduate from National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School took first place at Mediacorp’s Be A Podcastar competition, winning S$5,000 in cash and a one-year partnership with Mediacorp, among other prizes.

With her self-produced supernatural-themed podcast series titled Hell’s Incroyables, Genesis Lim edged out nine other contestants over three rounds of competition. What sealed the deal was her final podcast titled The Price for Eternal Beauty, A Spirit’s Final Request And More.

Lim, who also won podcasting equipment and an OSIM gaming chair, was one of the three podcasters who made it to the final round. The two runners-up each received S$200 in cash, podcasting equipment and an OSIM gaming chair.

In a statement, Mediacorp said: “On the whole, the panel of judges lauded Lim for her consistent improvements shown during each stage of the competition, in terms of both production and presentation qualities, as well as her outstanding ability to captivate and engage her listeners through her ghost stories."

Be A Podcastar, which launched in June 2023, is a competition that seeks to unearth promising podcasters among youths aged 15 to 25.

Interested applicants had to submit a five- to 10-minute English podcast in their choice genre to Mediacorp. Contestants were whittled down through two initial rounds and in the third and final round, the remaining three podcasters were evaluated by a panel of five judges, accounting for 60 per cent of their score. The remaining 40 per cent was decided by the number of listens.

The judges are industry professionals, including YES 933 DJ and award-winning podcaster Chen Ning; Mediacorp’s podcast content strategist Danny Koordi; co-founder of podcast itsclarity.co Nazurah Razali; co-founder of Malaysia’s podcast network Renegade Radio Norman Chella; and co-founder of Tomboy Tirade podcast series and founder of podcast company MeaVox Live Raven Lim.
