Koh Grill & Sushi Bar was a familiar name in Wisma Atria, being a mainstay at the BreadTalk Group-owned Food Republic food court for 17 years. The casual Japanese eatery, which had a teppanyaki counter, was well-loved for its affordable and tasty dishes.
But the restaurant shocked many fans earlier this month when it unexpectedly closed down and vacated its premises, leaving the question: Will another restaurant take over the space?
NEW TEPPEI CONCEPT TAKING OVER

As it turns out, a new standalone Japanese diner is indeed opening its doors at the same spot this February. It's owned by Japanese sushi chef by training Teppei Yamashita, who also runs popular eateries like Unagi Tei (formerly known as Man Man Japanese Unagi) and eponymous wallet-friendly omakase restaurant Teppei in Tanjong Pagar.
The upcoming Wisma Atria restaurant is his first concept located in a food court. Called Kai Kai Sushi & Grill, it is named after the Singaporean slang term gai gai, which means ‘to go out’.
AFFORDABLE PRICES
It will also have a teppanyaki counter layout similar to its predecessor, and offer “restaurant-quality food at affordable prices in a casual dining izakaya-style setting”. Kai Kai’s seafood and ingredients, like abalone, squid and cod, are “imported directly from Japan”.

The menu includes sushi and grilled dishes as well as hotpot, skewers and a la carte appetisers such as wagyu beef sukiyaki, where you can sample the uncommon but premium Hitachiwagyu beef air-flown from Ibaraki prefecture in Japan.
CASTLE-SHAPED BENTO

There is also a quirky Kai Kai castle bento, served in a multi-tiered bento box shaped like a Japanese castle. It comes with rice and toppings like mixed sashimi, chopped tuna belly, tempura, flying fish roe and salmon roe.
A la carte sushi items include maki rolls, an eight-piece sashimi moriawase platter with salmon, Japanese amberjack and tuna, and an assorted sushi platter with seafood like scallop, yellowtail and whelk.

Kai Kai Sushi & Grill opens sometime in February 2024 at #04-21 Food Republic Wisma Atria, 435 Orchard Rd, Singapore 238877.
