Low inflation and interest rates ‘not likely to return anytime soon’, says PM Lee in National Day message

Singapore has weathered the test of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the road ahead will not be easy, PM Lee Hsien Loong said in his National Day message on Monday (Aug 8). Singaporeans also have to be prepared that the region may not be as peaceful and stable as it has been so far, he added.

On inflation, he gave the assurance that the Government is “doing everything necessary” to help people cope with rising prices. Mr Lee added that the Government "stands ready to do more to help Singaporeans if things worsen. But the basic reality is that international economic conditions have shifted."

China announces fresh military drills around Taiwan

China's military announced fresh military drills on Monday (Aug 8) in the seas and airspace around Taiwan - a day after the scheduled end of its largest ever exercises in protest of last week's visit to Taipei by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Taiwan said the Chinese military ships, aircraft, and drones had simulated attacks on the island and its navy, and announced that it would hold live-fire military drills this week simulating its defence against a Chinese invasion.

Meanwhile, senior Chinese spokeswoman Hua Chunying prompted a storm of ridicule online after she pointed out the presence of Shandong dumpling restaurants and Shanxi noodle restaurants in Taipei in a Twitter post.

"Palates don't cheat. #Taiwan has always been a part of China. The long lost child will eventually return home," she tweeted.

Hong Kong cuts COVID-19 hotel quarantine from 7 days to 3 for incoming travellers

Hong Kong will shorten the COVID-19 hotel quarantine period for all arrivals to three days from seven. The measures will be effective from Friday, the city's leader, John Lee, said.

Arrivals will then need to self-monitor for a further four days, during which they are forbidden to enter premises such as restaurants and bars.

The city's border has been almost completely sealed since 2020 and it is one of the last places in the world still imposing quarantine for arrivals.
