Mere months following the return of famous stall Ah Pui Satay, its founder Ang Boon Ee – otherwise known as Ah Pui – has died at the age of 66.
On early Thursday morning (Jul 25), Ah Pui Satay’s Facebook page published a post that read: “Ah Pui’s health took a turn in recent months and he passed away peacefully today."
This news comes around two months after 8days.sg last heard that Ah Pui suffered a relapse after his cancer was in remission.
Ah Pui, who reopened Ah Pui Satay in April this year at a Toa Payoh hawker centre after a one-and-a-half-year hiatus, was popular for his plump Hainanese-style charcoal-grilled pork satay.
He started out selling satay as a street hawker in the ’70s, before moving to a cafe called 195 Pearl Hill Cafe in Chinatown in 2021. The hawker later left to open his own standalone eatery at Smith Street together with his disciple, Ang Thiam Seng (known as Seng), 57, but the duo shut their business in November 2022, citing Ah Pui’s poor health.
After a break, Ah Pui and Seng reopened their satay business at a humbler hawker stall in Toa Payoh in April. At the time, Seng told 8days.sg that “Ah Pui is well rested and ready to make a comeback”.
Ah Pui Satay is currently on a short break and will resume operations on Jul 28.
A tribute post on the stall's Facebook page said: "Ah Pui’s legacy and love for satay will continue to live on through our stall."
