SINGAPORE: Merlion Park in Singapore's Marina Bay area has reached full capacity for the New Year countdown and is now closed, said the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Saturday (Dec 31).

The police said in a tweet at about 8.10pm that crowds are building, advising members of the public to avoid the area.

Revellers planning to join the New Year countdown event at Marina Bay are advised to check crowd levels online before heading down to join the festivities, said the police earlier this week.

An information portal, Crowd@MarinaBay, went online at 6pm on Saturday. It shows real-time crowd levels and area closures, as well as features such as alternate walking paths.

Police officers, auxiliary police officers and security officers have been deployed to manage crowds at various locations such as The Promontory, One Fullerton/Merlion Park, Esplanade Park, Esplanade Waterfront Promenade and Marina Bay Sands Waterfront Promenade.

"When the capacity of these areas reaches planned safety thresholds, these areas will be closed to ensure the safety of members of the public," SPF said on Tuesday.
