SINGAPORE: Mei Yuen Restaurant along East Coast Road, a decades-old eatery known for its roast meat and wanton mee, has had its licence suspended for two weeks because of cockroaches on the premises.
According to a National Environment Agency (NEA) suspension notice, the restaurant's licence is suspended from Monday (Apr 30) to May 13. It was also fined S$800.
Mei Yuen Restaurant accumulated 12 demerit points for two offences of failing to keep the licensed premises free of cockroach infestations over the last 12 months.
Depending on past records, a food operator who accumulates 12 or more demerit points during a 12-month period may have its licence suspended for a period of either two or four weeks, or cancelled.
All food handlers working in the suspended premises would also be required to attend and pass the basic food hygiene course again before they can resume work as food handlers, according to NEA.
"NEA takes a serious view of these offences and would like to remind food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene practices at all times, and to engage only registered food handlers," the authority said.
