Singaporean Sandi Tan has made history by becoming the first local filmmaker to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature for her feature length directorial debut Shirkers.

The film, now currently streaming on Netflix, follows the real-life story about the previously stolen and eventually found footage of her own 27-year-old independent film that would have been her first produced screenplay.

Shirkers has won two major awards so far, the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award at Sundance and Best Documentary Film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Assocation.

Singapore last featured on the Oscar stage when animator Nickson Fong – as part of a three-man international team – received the Academy’s Technical Achievement Award in 2013 for inventing the “Pose Space Deformation”, a technique that allowed for more life-like movements and nuances in 3D animated characters and faces.

To Singapore, With Love filmmaker Tan Pin Pin also received a plaque in 2002 at the Student Academy Awards for her documentary which was established to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level.
