Celeb photographer Ade Lau opens Thai cafe at Amoy Hotel

When travelling came to a sudden halt during the COVID-19 pandemic, celeb photographer Ade Lau had the idea to start a food delivery business with three of her friends. As they missed the street food in Thailand, they began selling popular dishes like steamed crabs, basil pork rice and mango sticky rice from home.

This month, the four pals have decided to upgrade their operations to a dine-in Thai cafe called Fourgather at Amoy Hotel in Telok Ayer. The 80-seat night market-style eatery is accessible via the Fuk Tak Chi Museum, one of the oldest Taoist temples in Singapore.

The cafe is split into a main dining hall and lounge, decorated with items sourced from Thailand. A team of Thai chefs helms the kitchen here. There is also a bar within the space, which serves Thai street food bar snacks and tipples like cocktails, spirits and beer.

Ade, 37, is managed by Mediacorp’s The Celebrity Agency. Other than running her own restaurant, her day job is photographing stars like Fann Wong, Christopher Lee, Richie Koh and Cynthia Koh.

“Our goal is to become a place where friends can gather for authentic street food in a vibey and casual space while enjoying good food and music,” she shared.

LUNCH SETS FROM S$9.90

As it’s located in the CBD, the casual diner offers budget-friendly lunch sets from S$9.90 between 11.30am to 3pm (last order at 2.30pm). This includes khao khai jiao (Thai-style omelette with rice, S$9.90) and stir-fried basil pork/chicken and scrambled egg with rice (S$12.90).

Each set comes with a drink, with options like Thai milk tea (S$4.50 a la carte), Thai soya bean milk (S$4 a la carte) or iced Thai milk coffee (S$4.50 a la carte).

There are also heartier dishes for sharing with large groups, like fried fish miang (S$44.90), a platter of fried fish served with herbs and veggies; moo koop foon (roast pork rice, S$18.90); pok pork spicy noodle (S$13.90); yum puu maa (flower crab salad, S$36.90) and matchstick wings (S$11.90), a bite-sized fried chicken wing appetiser.
