Changi Airport temporarily closes runway after Air China flight catches fire

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Changi Airport on Sunday (Sep 10) temporarily closed a runway after an Air China plane caught fire en route from Chengdu.

Flight CA403 "encountered smoke in the forward cargo hold and lavatory" before landing on Runway 3 at around 4.15pm, the airport said in a Facebook post.

"All passengers and crew have (been) evacuated safely," added Changi, which is served by three runways all 4,000m long.

"The fire in the left engine has been put out."

Apart from closing Runway 3 for the time being, flight operations may also be affected, Changi Airport said.

It advised passengers to check its website or app for the latest information on their flights.

Air China and Changi Airport Group are also assisting passengers and crew affected by the incident.

In January this year, a Scoot flight was forced to return to the gate shortly before take-off, after a power bank caught fire and injured two passengers.
