SINGAPORE: Member of Parliament (MP) Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim has been appointed as chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Home Affairs and Law, the People’s Action Party (PAP) said on Monday (Jul 1).

The Chua Chu Kang MP takes on the role from Monday and replaces MP Murali Pillai (PAP-Bukit Batok) who was appointed and sworn in as Minister of State for Law and Transport on the same day.

Mr Zhulkarnain was previously deputy chairperson of the GPC.

GPCs are set up by the PAP to "scrutinise the legislation and programmes of the various ministries", according to the party's website. They serve as an additional channel of feedback on government policies.

Other members of the GPC for Home Affairs and Law are:

  • MP Christopher de Souza (PAP-Holland-Bukit Timah)
  • MP Sitoh Yih Pin (PAP-Potong Pasir)
  • MP Tan Wu Meng (PAP-Jurong)
  • MP Vikram Nair (PAP-Sembawang)
  • MP Patrick Tay (PAP-Pioneer)
  • MP Derrick Goh (PAP-Nee Soon)

Mr Zhulkarnain was elected MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC in the 2020 General Election. He is a senior partner at the law firm Dentons Rodyk.

After graduating from the National University of Singapore in 2005, he was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in 2006. He also holds a Masters of Law in Islamic Law and Finance from the Singapore Management University.

Mr Zhulkarnain is a member of the Estimates Committee, which examines the government's Budget.
