SINGAPORE: Restaurant operator Abu Mubarak was on Thursday (Jul 10) fined S$4,700 (US$3,483) for food safety lapses, following reports of gastroenteritis last year among people who consumed food from its Tampines outlet.
In April 2023, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) received reports of 12 cases of gastroenteritis among people who consumed food provided by the restaurant, which is located at 300 Tampines Avenue 5, SFA said in a news release.
Two were hospitalised and subsequently discharged.
A joint investigation conducted by SFA and MOH at the restaurant revealed multiple food safety lapses.
These included a cockroach infestation in the food preparation area and the possession of unclean food for sale.
Abu Mubarak also has an outlet on North Bridge Road.

"Food safety is a joint responsibility as food can be contaminated anywhere along the food chain," said SFA.
"While SFA continues to be vigilant and works to ensure regulatory measures are in place and properly enforced, the industry and consumers must also play their part."
It added that food operators should adhere to proper food hygiene and food safety requirements and ensure that their premises are clean and well-maintained.
Those who fail to do so could face a fine of up to S$2,000 on conviction under the Environmental Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations. In the case of a continuing offence, an offender faces a further fine of up to S$100 for every day or part thereof during which the offence continues after their conviction.
